ANC veteran Mavuso Msimang has cut ties with the ANC after decades as a member, citing rampant corruption within the party. Msimang’s resignation comes after ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula accused party veterans of de-campaigning the party.
In a resignation letter addressed to Mbalula, Msimang expressed deep concern over the state of affairs in South Africa. He highlighted the endemic corruption within the ANC and its detrimental impact on governance and the lives of the country’s impoverished citizens.
Msimang lamented the fact that after three decades in power, the ANC’s reputation had been marred by corruption. He stated that the very corruption the party once condemned now seemed to be ingrained within its DNA, posing grave consequences for the most vulnerable members of society.
Expressing his disillusionment with the party’s leadership, Msimang stated that his time and energy would be better spent elsewhere. While he acknowledged the difficulty of leaving an organization that once housed dedicated individuals whom he called comrades, he stressed the importance of monitoring governance in the country even after his departure.
The ANC Veterans League spokesperson, Snuki Zikalala, accepted Msimang’s resignation and described it as regrettable. Furthermore, Zikalala expressed disappointment over Mbalula’s accusation that party veterans were de-campaigning the ANC ahead of the upcoming 2024 elections.
Mbalula urged party leaders to address the challenges the ANC faced and stated their availability to resolve any issues, even at late hours.
