Dan Levy’s Directorial Debut ‘Good Grief’ Explores Love and Loss in Paris

Canadian actor and writer Dan Levy is set to make his directorial debut in the upcoming dramedy ‘Good Grief,’ which explores themes of love and loss in the enchanting city of Paris. The film, starring Levy alongside Luke Evans, Ruth Negga, and Himesh Patel, tells the story of Marc, a children’s book illustrator who faces a life-altering tragedy following the sudden death of his husband, Oliver.

Overwhelmed by grief, Marc decides to embark on a transformative journey to Paris with his closest friends, Sophie and Thomas, played by Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel respectively. The trio navigates their way through the picturesque city, seeking solace and answers to the hard questions about love and sorrow that they each carry.

Good Grief serves as a platform for Levy to explore his personal experiences with grief and loss. He shared that the film was inspired by the passing of his grandmother during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when the weight of collective tragedy was especially prominent. Through the film, Levy aims to honor the feelings he had during that period and hopes that it resonates with others who have experienced similar profound losses.

The movie is not a typical romantic comedy, but rather a heartfelt drama or ‘dramedy’ that delves into the complexities of grief and friendship. Levy finds catharsis in writing and directing Good Grief, as it allows him to channel his emotions and process the depth of his personal grief. The film promises to provide a bittersweet and relatable experience for audiences as they witness the characters’ journey of self-discovery and healing in the City of Light.

Good Grief will be released in select theaters on December 29th and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting January 5th, 2024.
